Organic clothing is made from organic cotton that has been cultivated according to the guidelines of organic farming. In organic farming, no genetically modified seeds, pesticides, or other chemical yielding aids are used. This positively affects the environment, agriculture and the health of cotton planters worldwide.
Ajna Design’s organic clothing is produced according to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) in our Portuguese factory. The GOTS standard awards organic clothing brands that manufacture their pieces environmentally friendly from the state of raw material through to the finished piece. In fact, GOTS sets some of the highest ecological and social standards for organic production within the textile industry.
Worldwide, a variety of standards certify organic cotton. However, some of these labels only designate that the cotton in question does not contain more than a certain amount of pollutants. Therefore, they do not mean that the processed cotton is actually organic. If you want to make sure that the clothes you are buying are actually organic, you should only go for those labeled with the „Bio-Siegel“.
The organic cotton Ajna Design uses is chosen carefully and cultivated organically. Organic cultivation saves arable land from drying up and protects it against pesticides that pollute the soil and ground water. Because organic cotton seeds are never genetically modified, the organic cultivation of cotton doesn’t only have a positive effect on the final item of clothing, but also on people and nature involved in its production; thanks to natural farming methods, the habitat of useful insects and other local animals remains largely unaffected.
Commonly produced cotton on the other hand uses up a lot of water. As all sorts of cotton are prone to pest infestation, a wide range of pesticides is employed in the cultivation of ordinary cotton. On average, more than 8000 chemicals will be applied in the making of an ordinary piece of clothing. On top of that, another 4000 dye substances are being used. Purchasing organic cotton protects not only our own skin from such harmful chemicals, but also the health of cotton farmers and other workers in the textile industry.
Organic cotton is a good start, but not everything made from organic cotton is automatically eco fashion. Many renown manufacturers use organic cotton and label it as such, but do not alert customers to the fact that their clothes were dyed in non-organic ways. Like that, allergy protection can’t be guaranteed. It is only certified organic clothing that protects you from allergic reactions and will feel soft and comfortable on your skin.
